HSS configuration presents the best of the both worlds - single coils at neck and middle for clean, mild overdrive and humbucker at bridge for fatter tone/higher overdrive. Works really well since the same patch / same gain setting can provide reasonable cleans (when placed on single coils) and significant overdrive (when placed on humbuckers).
And of course the combination of bridge+middle pickup for that clean chunky rhythm sounds (works really well when Direct into PA/DI/Soundcard) - famously knowns as the "quacking" sound.
I was looking around for a Strat body (for playing comfort) and this ticked the boxes:
1) ergonomic cut-aways that allow you to sit and play
2) cable entry socket on face, protecting the cable from getting bent and frayed
3) HSS configuration allowing me to change at will from low gain to high gain sound
4) usable tremolo system that doesn't lose tuning, neither is as elaborate as a floyd rose
5) decent fretboard, smooth neck for fast playing up and down the fretboard
6) amazing color schemes
What I feel could be improved:
1) few frets were not uniform. Now after playing for so many years it feels ok, but initially a few frets were rought
2) frets could've been jumbo allowing even faster movement over the fretboard
3) would've preferred the humbucker to have more "nasal middy" tone (emphasized 800-1200 Hz spectrum)
4) better material for nut. Right now it appears to be a piece of plastic which will wear down. My el cheapo Givson guitar has the nut as well as zero'th fret that is certainly more long lasting
There is nothing better than this guitar! Works like heaven! So happy with this one!
