While dynamic microphones don't require it, small and large diaphragm condenser microphones do. Since it even shields the capsule from unintentional water drops that may fall from my mouth, I have never used my microphone without it. In my opinion, it gives the microphone setup on live streams or in videos a lot more professional appearance.
