Don't let the price fool you. At high tuning, this snare really comes alive! I am playing on stock skins right now with a bit of muffling. I have ordered Evans HD Dry for Batter and Remo Clear Ambassador for Snare Side, which should cure the ring and overtones, which are natural to steel shells without diecast hoops. The 1.2 mm steel shell makes it sturdy and heavy. This snare drum is a steal at this price point. This kind of tone is mostly available on snares over $250. For my sound palette, I found it sounding better than the SLP Big Black Steel. But then, snare tones are always a personal choice.
