In some songs they use a technique called "pulling off". This is when you play a note on a fret and then quickly change to a lower fret using the fingers you use to play the frets with. This gives it a clean sound. To perform a pull off, first learn which chord is the one you are going to be using. So for example if you heard a song and there is a pull off, you would do the following to do a pull off:

First, decide which fret to start the pull off from

EG : (IF YOU CHOSE THE "A" STRING)

And you learn that the pull off originally starts on fret 5:

A|---------5-----------------------------|

You then learn that the next note is on fret 3:

A|---------5-------3--------------------|

To pull off in this example, you play the 5th fret but you keep another finger even lower, on the third string. When it is time for you to change from fret 5 to fret 3. You use the finger that played fret 5 to strum the string as soon as you take it off. To do this you kind of sweep the finger to the side and then fret 3 will be played because there is already a finger holding down on it.

Sounds much smoother than playing the frets individually.

Also, if a song calls for a pull off, you will see the letter "p" in between the frets that make up the pull off.

So for example if you saw:

You would play the 2nd fret on the A string, the 3rd fret on the D string, the 5th string on the B string, the 6th fret on the G string, the 5th fret on the G string, and then you would do a pull off from the 4th fret on the "high e" string, to the 2nd fret on the "high e" string
