All right. As you may know, the minor scale is very important and is used in most genres of music. But what most people don't realize is that there are scales within this scale that are hard to uncover unless you move the scale over a position. That is what I am going to be teaching.

Let's start off with the standard E minor

Position 1
G|------------------0-2-4-|
D|------------0-2-4-------|
A|------0-2-3-------------|
E|0-2-3-------------------|

Simple right? Well, let's move on to the next mode.

Position 2
G|------------------2-4-5-|
D|------------2-4-5-------|
A|------2-3-5-------------|
E|2-3-5-------------------|

This, in and of itself, is another scale. Now try linking those together. I usually link them by ascending and descending.

Position 1                 Position 2
G|------------------0-2-4-|5-4-2-------------------|

A|------0-2-3-------------|------------5-3-2-------|
E|0-2-3-------------------|------------------5-3-2-|

Of course, there are many different way syou could vary this, but this is what I find easiest. Next mode.

Position 3
G|------------------4-5-7-|
D|------------4-5-7-------|
A|------3-5-7-------------|
E|3-5-7-------------------|

This particular mode should sound familiar. It's actually the G natural major scale. Even if you don't reccognize the scale because of the name, the sound of it should be very familiar. This mode can be linked to the previous 2 by ascending after sliding from the 2nd fret to the 3rd (the root note). Next mode.

Links by descending from the 9th fret after sliding from the 7th.

Position 5

E|7-8-10---------------------|

Links by ascending from the 7th fret after sliding from the 5th.

Position 6
G|------------------------9-11-12|

E|8-10-12------------------------|

Links by descending from the 12th fret after sliding from the 11th.

Position 7

Links by ascending from the 10th fret after sliding from the 8th.

Position 8
G|---------------------------12-14-16|

E|12-14-15---------------------------|

Links by descending from the 16th fret after sliding from the 14th. This is an octave replica of the 1st position (open E minor).

These modes are composed of these same shapes all across the fretboard.
|1-2-4-|1-3-4-|1-3-5|

This help a lot with fretboard technique because the shapes are similar.After playing through this for a while, you should be able to envision the minor scale all over the fretboard, especially if you move this lesson over into other keys.
